Just after Pearl Harbor Day, a motherless six-year-old girl awakens when a bomb falls a block from her home, the beginning of years of shattering deprivation.

In World War II Manila, Katinka suffers starvation, illness, and cruelty and loses family in the infamous Bataan Death March. She survives the Japanese occupation and the Battle of Manila. By the end of the war, Manila is destroyed and a million Filipinos are dead, but Katinka has endured the worst and now experiences the American liberation and reconstruction.

Two Filipina scientists Maribel Nonato and Rizalina de Leon garnered this year's Gregorio Y. Zara Awards for Basic and Applied Research, respectively, for their forays into the study of plants native to the Philippines. Nonato studied the phytochemistry and biological activities of pandan plants, while De Leon pursued methods to produce bioethanol using local varieties of fungi as alternative sources of ethanol additives in place of food crops such as corn. California Governor Brown Signs into Law Improved Protections of Immigrants and Domestic Workers

Earlier this month, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 443, The Truth Act and the Domestic Worker's Bill. The TRUTH Act creates increased transparency and due process in the ways that local law enforcement cooperate and function with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Domestic Worker's Bill grants overtime protections to California's privately hired domestic workers and removes the sunset provision and make the law's provisions permanent.

The segment featured reporter Jesse Watters taking a trip to New York's Chinatown to ask passersby a series of culturally insensitive and ignorant questions while playing stereotypical Asian music and intercutting the story with martial arts movie cuts.
